German Porcelain Medallion for Dresden -Meissen 1922

Porcelain Medallion Commemorating a Gathering of WWI Communications Corp Veterans in Dresden, Germany in May of 1922

On May 6-8, 1922 there was a gathering of WWI veterans who were part of the communications corps.  This medallion was made to commemorate this gathering.  This medallion is listed as item 720d in the Karl Scheuch Catalog, in category 9, which means that no more than 200 of these medallions were produced making it extremely rare. 

On one side is a depiction of a boy holding a sword and the coat of arms of Dresden.  Around the edge are the dates 6. 7. und 8 Mai 1922.  Underneath the boy is the Meissen crossed swords symbol.  There are gold rays coming from behind the boy as well as gold around the rim of the medallion.  On the reverse side is a propeller attached to a pair of wings with another sunburst of gold and probably what are communication signals radiating outward.  Encircling this scene are communication cables.  On the outside of the cables are the words EISENBAHN-FLIEGER-KRAFTFAHRER-LUFTSCHIFFER-u.NACHRITENTRUPPEN. This translates as "Railway-Aviator-Motorist- Airship/Blimp- and Signal/News Corps".  

  The medallion is made from the very high grade clay (Böttgersteinzug) found near Meissen that put that region on top of the ceramic and porcelain world hundreds of years ago.  In fact the crossed swords of the Meissen works is the oldest known trademark in continuous use.  There is an interesting article that gives more details about the porcelain coins and medallions from the Meissen works.  The link is http://www.nbs.sk/_img/Documents/BIATEC/BIA04_04/25_27.pdf
 

The size of the medallion is 50mm so it is quite large.  The nickel is only for comparison and not part of the sale.  I have a matching white porcelain medallion also with gold decorations which I will list next week.
