1940 Harley UH Big Twin Flathead. I put this bike together out of parts I have been collecting. Engine is a 1940 UH with matching number cases. Cases are in pretty good shape. No main bearings in engine. Fly wheels are riding on the oil slinger in one half, and the cam cover bushing on other side. Nice set of flywheels, but they will need new shafts. Connecting rods are very nice originals. Still have the bearings in them and races look real nice. rear cylinder is an early 13 fin 74 cylinder and is still at 74" bore. Front cylinder is a 13 fin 80 that is at .060 over. This one should be sleeved and bored to the first size the rear cylinder cleans up at, or bore them both to standard 80". No broken fins on either. Nice set of origional aluminum heads. Rear head has on fin by plug with part of the top broke off, but its not going to be that noticeable or any big deal. Both oil pumps are complete and in good shape. Nice set of original cams and gears. I left the pinion gears out of engine, since it has no main bearings I did not want them to get damaged. Nice set of tappet blocks and tappets. They should have some new rolls. No valves in engine and missing one guide, but they would need replacing anyways. I do have all the retainers and keepers and they come with it. I didn't have any retaining clips for the valve covers but they are complete other than that. A nice M51L original carb that is all complete and in very good shape. Air cleaner is original stainless. Not the right one for 1940. It was banged up pretty bad but I have it straightened out pretty good. It still is far from perfect but they are impossible to find and its much better than a repo. J hooks are all good. No mesh in it. I didn't have enough head bolt washers but engine is all together with original hardware other than that. No generator. NOS oil pressure sending unit. A nice, basically complete, very rebuildable engine. Frame is a very nice late 40 frame. Very early 41 frames were the same but they bent the frame at the neck to change the rake. Supposedly no 1940 frames had the battery ground tab but this one does. It does not have the bent neck. I have owned this frame for over 30 years and it had been sitting for 20 when I bought it. There was a 1940 engine init and the correct springer with the 1940 brake in it when I got it, so I think its safe to say that some of the last 1940 frames made had the ground tab. No smashed tubes and nothing missing or modified. A bracket was added in the rear for the strut on a disk brake, that can be easily removed or leave it there, you can't see it anyway. Front moter mount was broke, but has been repaired. Top motor mount has been replaced. No bondo on this frame. A very nice super rare frame. Even has the original tool box bracket still rivited on. Transimission is rebuilt with zero miles on it. A quality job - needs nothing. OEM case with new shafts and gears. Kicker is all new. Trans has a ratchet lid on it now, but I am including a drum top for the hand shift. Original kick cover with the parts but threads on fill hole stripped. Springer is original Harley inline. A pretty nice one. Has parts on it from a few different years. Except for the bottom damper to frame bracket, friction disks, and front fender, the front end is completely original. I had all the hardware and a nice set of original cups for the frame. Front brake is in excellent condition and complete. Hub cap needs to be replated. Front wheel is not to bad. Chrome has some bad spots but would look good polished up. No show piece but a good rider. Back wheel rim is bad, but good star OEM hub. I didn't have a rear brake, just a well used backing plate. Rear axle is original as are adjusters. I had an original cross shaft, rod and clevis for the rear brake through. Oil tank is NOS repop with sidefill. Rear fender is repop. Tail section is jammed up. Its repairable, but no prize. Front fender is about a 30 year old NOS repop. It fits pretty good, pretty decent fender. Primary is original, but a newer than 40 one for the wide clutch. Outer one is pretty good shape, inner one needs repair. Bolt holes to the motor are broke out and all the top threads have been drilled out that outer cover mounts to. I have included a repair piece for the motor bolt holes. Inspection cover is new repop. Derby cover is a NOS bird one. Chrome isn't perfect on it but not bad. No clutch, hub, or primary drive in the primary. Original seat post and T bar. Clutch bracket is original, but all I had was the bracket. No clutch pedal or linkage. Kick stand is new repop. Gas tanks are original but different years. I have included some original trim to make the early tank match the other. Right gas cap is NOS eaton, the other is a used repop. Dash plate is a good original one. Dash cover is an old repop. Chromes not the best. Crash bars are original. Even had the original U bolts for the front one. Handle bars are some I made from the tree off of an old set of bad bars. I saved the spark advnce grip (shown) that could be welded on to these. Run a new throttle grip on the other side and you're good to go. Everybody will want a pair. Exhaust pipes are NOS paucho upswept fish tails. They look fantastic on the bike. A super rare bike, that are not for sale very often. Its worth more parted out than my starting price. Comes with all the extra pieces and original hardware in the pictures. It's missing some parts but still is a pretty complete bike with a lot of really hard to find parts. They may not all be the right year, but it will look great and be fun to drive just the same. It needs rebuilding and not everything is 100% bolted together, but it's good to ship the way it is. Extra parts shown will have to be boxed, I can give them to your shipper or ship them to you at your expense. I will not ship the bike. Shipping will be up to you to arrange. I will load it or assist elseware if I can but ultimatelly it is up to you. No titles on anything this old in Vermont. I will include a bill of sale as a 1940 Harley Davidson UH motorcycle on a State of Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles official Bill of Sale form that will be notarized as my signature. This should get you a title in most places that require one. Bill of Sale will be from me to you. I will sign any other form you may need to have. $500 deposit via Paypal due within 2 days auction end with rest by certified bank check with in 7 days auction end or I will relist.
