BMW R100 and Gemini Sidecar

This is a unique combination for sale, a BMW 1000cc flat twin with a Gemini double adult sidecar. The outfit always attracts attention wherever it goes, sounds a bit like a Lancaster bomber with the reverse cone megas and steers well with leading link forks and square sidecar tyres. It will barrel along at 70mph+ with ease, and the engine has plenty of power to pull the chair. It comes with an MOT to 15/01/12 and with tax until July 2012.  It does need a bit of tidying to make it perfect but it is a lovely bike and I hope it finds a sympathetic owner.

The Bike:

She is a 1976 R75/7 with a later (and better) engine from a 1985 R80ST which has the top end from a 1980 R100RT (the earlier, big valve, big carb, 70BHP one not the later 60BHP one). At some stage she had new cam chain and tensioner, new gaskets, new clutch plate and springs (heavy duty) recon gearbox, (the box and clutch/flywheel are the later ones, lighter flywheel and lighter clutch) carbs re done, electronic ignition, oil cooler, deeper sump, electronic voltage regulator, alloy air box with K&N, and the exhaust exits in one side (to keep the chair cool), with new reverse cone megs, and stainless down pipes. The engine has the old 'kidney bowl' rocker covers and has had the heads converted to unleaded and the exhaust threads redone at Motorworks. A new Odyssey battery was fitted last year.

The mileage on the speedo is 51,900, but I do not know how many miles the current engine has covered. I have some history of what’s been done over the last 6 years. It has had a full service 300 miles ago.

The bike has the frame braced and reinforced to prevent flex from the sidecar (which is welded on) It has leading link front end, Koni dial a ride shocks, rears are heavy duty Hagons, it has bar mounted master cylinders, jap switches, braided hoses, twin discs up front (newish discs and pads) and a drum at the rear, heated grips (not working) ,  BMW touring  panniers, steering damper. The rims are stainless Akront with Avon square section (sidecar) tyres. It has been built to tow the chair. The seat does need covering and the tank and sidepanels don’t look great.

The Sidecar:

The sidecar itself is a Gemini double adult and will seat two full grown adults with ease or several kids. I have no idea how old it is, it’s constructed from wood/metal so it is heavy!  The sidecar has a half length vinyl sunroof, roof rack and tow bar. There are two bench seats, the rear one folds forward and has storage space behind. The rear seat has a seat belt fitted. There is a deep footwell at the front with a largish parcel shelf, and a parcel shelf at the rear. The outside lights are early Land Rover and are for sidelights, brake and indicators, with the main lights being on the bike. The sidecar wheel comes from a Mini so it should be easy to find tyres, and a sidecar brake could be fitted but I don’t really think there’s a need.

She is not the prettiest bike so don't expect her to be immaculate. Function over form. What she lacks in finesse she make up for in style and originality. It has all the usual knocks and scratches that you find on a 35 year old bike. The last MOT had 2 advisories, these were “Steering movement slightly ‘notchy’” and “nearside sidecar wheel bearings are slightly rough”.
