ITALY. Milan. Gomme Pirelli. 36mm, embossed aluminum. Stamp value of 2-Centesimi, the first time I have seen this stamp used. Condition: XF, which is nice for Pirelli, so often seen battered.

The hard use observed on most Pirelli pieces is explained by the brutality of daily life in this hardscrabble region of Italy. Had Encased Postage been circulated less in the North (e.g. Milan) and more in the peaceful, refined, cultured and intellectual districts such as Sicily and Calabria (where the Renaiisance, Opera and my relatives came from), the average state of preservation would be much higher --approaching that of the French issues,
